20 things i’ve learnt at 20

I turned 20 a couple of days ago… none the less, if you told me I just turned 16 I would have believed you too. Anyway, after seeing all these videos on Youtube on things i’ve learnt at… I thought i’d make it into a blogpost. I had an amazing birthday and I can truly say i’m very happy at this point in my life. I know, I have lots more to learn and discover and there are many more lessons to learn, but these are the 20 things I wish I could have told my younger self, or if you are younger, you are one lucky bird, because I am about to give you a few keys that made my life so much better.

1 | Surround yourself with genuine friends

Time and time again I put up with people’s shit. I’d alway put in so much effort while they never did it back. I never knew it could be different from that as I become used to it. A friendship needs to be a two way street, not you always being there for your friends but whenever something is up with you.. they just don’t care. Especially at a young age this happens a lot. Now i’ve gathered such a genuine and nice group of people around me and I couldn’t be happier.

2 | Don’t spend all your money on things, spend it on experience.

I’ve spent lots of money when I was younger just for the sake of spending money or bringing home that plastic bag filled with stuff. I’ve figured out that days out or going out for dinner with friends is a better way to spend money as memories last longer than that cheap ass t-shirt from H&M (sorry not sorry).

3 | You don’t always have to look your best.

Are you the one curling your hair every single morning before high school ? That will definitely pass. Stay that extra half an hour or so in bed instead of curling hair that will be straight anyway after a few hours. People don’t really care, trust me.

4 | Cut yourself some slack, nobody’s perfect.

Don’t be so hard on yourself! Mistakes are okay, you’ll learn from them anyway.

5 | Say yes more often, you’ll have a story to tell.

Sometimes you want to stay in that safe comfort zone but when you say yes more often you’ll actually have a story to tell. Do that city trip or go bungee jumping, just do it. It will be worth it.

6 | You are capable of so much more than you think

It is very easy to give up when you are young, but keep on trying! Get back up and kick ass. You can do whatever whenever you want.

7 | It’s okay to go solo

When we are younger it is often quite embarrassing sitting alone, or doing something by yourself, but actually… it’s okay to go somewhere all by yourself. It means you are able to rely on yourself and it can be quite good for character. Go have that coffee by yourself!

8 | No actually means no

Don’t say yes when you want to say no. If you don’t want to, don’t do it.

9 |You do not have to please everyone.

As a child or young teen you usually want and try to please everyone, heck even adults do this. Here is a wake up call for you, it isn’t possible to do so. You are not going to please everyone in life so accept the fact that you can’t.

10|Stand the fuck up for yourself

The title speaks for itself. Don’t let people put you down and don’t put up with their shit.

11| Put effort in contact

Yes it takes effort and time and yes it is easy to forget, but keep in contact with your friends every now and again. It so easy to let it slip.. but i’ve experienced a lot of friendships going to waste due to just the simple lack of saying ”hey, how are you ?” or ”in the mood for a cup of coffee ?”. Don’t be stupid and put effort in friendships. It will safe you an awkward moment when you see them in public. Don’t be a fool though.. don’t keep on trying with a friend who just doesn’t care.

12| If you have to many things to do, make a to do list.

A to-do list makes your day organized and trust me, it will save your ass.

13|Drink lots of water

Want good skin ?  Want a good metabolism ? Want to be fit ? Drink your water kids. Easy as that.

14| It will get better

You just need to remind yourself every now and again that.. yes you are in a shitty situation right now.. or nothing is going as planned but it will get better. Maybe not now or soon.. but it will.

15| Start caring, become a vegetarian

I am not saying you have to become a vegetarian but it is important to acknowledge what you put in your mouth, what happened to that animal and what it is doing to the environment. This became very important to me over the last few years, so I made the decision to become a vegetarian. I feel better, I look better and IT IS helping the environment and slaughtering of animals, even though people say it doesn’t. Be the change you wish to see in the world.

16| It’s okay to laugh about your own jokes

Laugh about your own jokes and laugh at yourself. If you don’t, who will ?

17| Don’t postpone a doctors visit

I know it is tempting.. but don’t postpone a doctors visit. It might be serious.. take care of your body/mind.

18| Take care of your skin

Take off your make up every day, clean your face daily, use moisturizer, drink lots of water and don’t touch your face 24/7. It is very important to take care of your skin as it is the biggest organ of your body.

19| Stop the internet addiction

Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.. it can all get a bit overwhelming. Especially while growing up. I deleted Facebook and Twitter from my phone. I put my phone on airplane mode every night and put it off when I am dressed and had breakfast. It will ensure your rest and you’ll sleep and wake up much better (listen to the big sis aka me).

20| Life is good

And at twenty i’ve also learnt that you don’t have to worry so much.. and that life is pretty good if you let it.

What are the things you have learnt over the years of living and experiencing different situations ? This blogpost was so fun to write, I didn’t even know I had this much advise. I had an amazing birthday and wanted to share a little bit of it with you. Amazing friends, family and i’m not going to lie.. amazing presents too.

Thank you so much for reading and until next time!

Lots of love,
